Reviews David
add-on, application, extension, firefox, plugin, retweet, tweet, Twitter
Many of the posts from people I follow on Twitter are all displayed as being posted from some new and wonderful Twitter application. This has been a trend I’ve resisted following as I prefer simplicity. I would think to myself: Why have another desktop application cluttering up my screen when Twitter’s own website does the job perfectly well?. Well, the reasons for having a twitter application include nice little touches such as automatic notification and not having to keep going back to the website.

The TwitterFox in action
Well, a compromise has become available, the form of a Firefox add-on called TwitterFox which can be found at http://twitterfox.net/. This is the best of both worlds, as I have the features of a Twitter App, but it is still running within my web browser, and not cluttering up my desktop.
This is a really neat little thing. All you see is the Twitter icon in your browser’s status bar, and when when it finds new tweets from anyone you follow, it adds the number of unread tweets beside the icon. The list of tweets appears as a resizeable overlay on your browser, which can be summoned by either clicking the Twitter icon or pressing a key combination (ctrl-shift-I by default).
The TwitterFox window has three tabs, for “Recent” tweets, “Mentions” for @replies, and “Messages” your direct messages. However, a view of your favourite tweets is not available. At the bottom of the window is a text entry box for you to tweet your latest profound insight into kittens. The text input has a couple of tricks up its sleeve for helping you craft your latest work literay genious, by giving a remaining character count, and a button (and key-combo) to paste in the URL of your current browser tab. Not to worry if your URL takes you over the character count because TwitterFox will automatically parse your long URL through the bit.ly URL clipping service.
Something that the Twitter website has that TwitterFox does not support is Hash Tags. Having the ability to filter/search for posts with a specific hash tag would be a very welcome addition, for some users at least. TwitterFox doesn’t support following or un-following either.
Each tweet of the people you follow also has the same roll-over icons as Twitter’s website for replying and adding tweets to your favourite tweets. You also have a right-click menu on each tweet for copying the content and, my personal favourite, retweeting something someone else has said. Oh, and if the tweet is one of yours, you can also delete it this way. Although this is the only method you have of deleting, and I didn’t think it was immediately obvious.

Website Updates David
dst, php, plugin, time, wordpress
I have just discovered that Wordpress does not automatically adjust for daylight saving time. Well, a very quick Google led me to this little gem: “Time Zone“. It’s a single PHP file which you drop into your plugin’s directory.
