[Windows Freeware - MultiMedia Conversion]

Quick Media Convert is a straigth forward, dare I say idiot proof, multimedia transcoding tool.

It has a simple drag and drop interface for adding the files you want to convert, along with a row of readily identifiable icons to choose the format you want to convert your content to. If the simple interface doesn’t give you enough control, there is an advanced interface which allows you to handle every specific detail of the conversion.

It can even handle Flash video files. Which is perfect if you just have to have that skate boarding dog from Youtube on your mobile phone or PMP. From some preliminary* testing I’ve done, it even seems that it can miraculously handle BBC flash video files too!

*(Note: So far I’ve just tested an episode of EastEnders, although it was a painfully slow conversion, which I guess is due to the DRM method they use.)

It isn’t an open source application, but it is free of charge. It also has a webcam and DV cam capturing mode, as well as a screen capturing mode; (I haven’t tried these so I can’t say much about them).

I would be interested in feed back about this one from non-Windows users. Can you make it work under Parallels (for Mac) or WINE (for Linux) ?

Would you like PDF with that?

I’m experimenting with a new plugin. You may notice below each post there is a line that says “Send post as PDF to” with a form to enter your e-mail address.

This is a plugin that sends my posts over to a site called PDF24 where their servers converts my posts to PDF and e-mails it to you. I know most of my posts don’t really warrant this, although I have been writing some longer posts lately that I thought might benefit from being downloadable in PDF form.

Anyway, please test it out, and let me know what you think to the idea in general.

Thanks.

Happy Boxing Day everyone!

Need to convert a file you don’t have the software for? Need to e-mail a large file to a friend with a small inbox?

Try these sites: Zamzar and YouConvertIt.

Both of these sites are able to convert a huge range of documents, images, audio, video and archive (e.g. zip) formats. Plus you can give them the URL of an online flash video and your desired format. They’ll convert those too.

To get the converted file you need to supply an e-mail address so that they can e-mail a download link when the conversion is complete. So if the file is for you, use your own, or if you want the file to be sent to someone else, then use their address. YouConvertIt has a specific page for just sending a file to someone without conversion too.

YouConvertIt also has a unit conversion page. So no more need for those manky little diaries, like you probably were given yesterday!
