About David
Hello World, as you may suspect I’m David Gilson. This is my website and it’s here to tell the you about my expertise and interests.
I’m trained in physics and mathematics. I gained a “Master of Physics” degree (MPhys, 1st class Hons) from the University of Hull in 2001, my final year specialised in Computational Physics. In 2008 I went on to gain a “Master of Science” (MSc by research) in applied mathematics, focusing on non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics. To round off my letters, I am an Associate Member (AMInstP) of the Institute of Physics.
I am interested & passionate about education. While at the University of Hull I participated in a number of educational and outreach projects. I worked as an “ACE Week” facilitator for five concurrent years. As a post-graduate student, I assisted with and taught advanced mathematics at two local schools for the “Gifted and Talented” initiative (for which I wrote this). At that time I was also a mathematics tutor to two classes of undergraduate engineering students, and a private A-Level maths tutor. (Much earlier than these projects, circa 1996, I also worked as a chemistry demonstrator during summer schools at my sixth form college, Wyke College).
Academia aside, I am a technology enthusiast (a.k.a. “geek”). Following the technology news is like watching a never ending drama, and it’s great to see how all the physics I leant about is put to use in increasingly fantastic ways.
I have a modest programming background. I was a self-taught Psion programmer. Circa 1998 I released a shareware statistics application called Analyser. I also released two open source applications, “FileTidy” and “WhichCD” (listed here, and can be downloaded from here). As part of my MPhys degree, I did a course on C Programming, for which I came top of my class; I later put this to use on my final year project.
My aim with this blog is to write as much helpful information about the world of tech as I can – I want to tell you about the things I’ve puzzled over (the How-To’s) and/or the things I think are hot topics. I write product reviews too. In the technology world, I have two main interests. First, mobile and converged devices; second, open source applications and operating systems. These aren’t the only things I write about, but there’s a bias toward them.
In 2008, my interest in technology led me into an association with CNET UK, where I am now a moderator on the “CNET UK Podcast Lounge” forum.
Continuing with my writing in 2009, I have began to submit aritcles to other websites, and you can find a list of everything I’ve published on my publications page.
